Description
EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian. AD 117-138. BI Tetradrachm (24mm, 11.95 g, 12h). Dated RY 9 (AD 124/5). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Nike seated left on cuirass, holding wreath and palm frond; behind, shield; ET Θ (date) across field. Köln 883; Dattari (Savio) 1415; K&G 32.324; RPC III 5539; Emmett 871.9 (R5). Toned, some roughness, deposits. Near VF. Rare.

From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 63 (21 May 2003), lot 1099.

It is very unusual to see the regnal date 9 given as a numeral. Due to the association of Θ with death (Thanatos), that date is normally written out as ET ENAT (year nine)

Closing Date and Time: 20 November 2024 at 12:03:00 ET.
